Vintage Cheddar Cheese Savoury Hot Cross Buns
Easter is full of sweet treats, so how about switching up an Easter classic with a savoury twist! These hot cross buns are made with our special aged vintage cheddar cheese for a rich and mature flavour, perfectly paired with salted butter and an extra sprinkle of cheese!
Ingredients
- 250ml whole milk
- 50g unsalted butter
- 500g strong white bread flour plus 5 tbsp
- 7g fast-action dried yeast
- ½ tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 egg-beaten
- 150g Vintage Special Aged Cheddar
Method
- Warm the butter and milk together until warm but not hot.
- Mix the flour, yeast, salt and pepper in a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre
- Pour in the warm milk mixture and a beaten egg
- Knead until the dough is smooth, this should take about 6-8 minutes.
- Cover over and leave the dough for about two hours for it to double in size.
- Stretch the dough out into a large square and top on the grated Vintage cheddar.
- Lightly knead again until the cheese is distributed throughout the dough.
- Divide into 12 balls and set onto a baking tray with enough room for them to rise.
- Cover over for around 30 minutes.
- Mix 5 tbsp of flour with 5 tbsp of water to form a paste, then use this to make a cross on top of each bun.
- Bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 180°c.
- Serve warm with your choice of accompaniments!
